3 Tips to Prep for Rain on your Wedding Day

No one wants it to rain on their wedding day. Having not yet been married myself, I can imagine that I, too, would be pretty upset about it raining on my wedding day! I, personally, was located behind the crowd in the above picture, as I started to frantically run our equipment up a hill! Oh, man.. Even I was not prepared.

However, as a vendor who has now seen rain happen at numerous weddings, it honestly is not the worst thing in the world. Check out my tips and tricks below to plan for the worst, and prepare for the best on your wedding day!

  1. Have a tent or an indoor backup plan

Usually if you are booking through a privately owned wedding venue, they have a clear back up plan for rain/ inclement weather. It is always a good idea to be up front and ask the venue what their plan is if it rains on your wedding day! This helps you to not experience any surprises, and to truly be in the moment, rain and all!

If your venue or private residence does not have a tent available, then it’s always great to have a plan b that works for you, and to share it with all of your vendors on board for your special day! Many vendors may charge extra for having a weather back up day, so if this is something you’re thinking of planning on, it’s always a great idea to state so up front to your vendors. Each vendor you are working with most likely has a weather clause in their contract, so it’s important to read that thoroughly as well.

2. Cute Umbrellas

I noticed that since 2020, clear umbrellas have been very popular at weddings, and actually look adorable in photos! I’ve seen buckets full of them for guests to use, which I loved as well. If you are hiring a wedding planner, they can certainly help you with this. There may also be companies that will let you rent umbrellas if you don’t feel like purchasing them for your wedding at home or a private residence.

3. Embrace the rain

Rain can honestly make for some beautiful wedding photos! Some, of course, were not on purpose, but I still love the candid reaction of couples and their guests as the rain starts to pour.

Mother nature waits for no one, not even on your wedding day! However, some of the coolest weddings I have been to had at least one rain shower involved.

Rain can put a lot of extra work on your vendors. For example, we have had to set up equipment then move it again multiple times as we worked with not only the changing weather, but the venue as they shifted rain plans locations as well. It’s important to respect your vendor’s needs in terms of maintaining their equipment and the integrity of their business. Losing equipment to rain is too expensive of a chance to take.

At the end of the day, you can’t prepare for every single thing that might happen on your wedding day. However, rain doesn’t have to be a question. Look into your venue’s back up plan, and make sure all of your vendors are aware of your plan b in case it rains.
